An investigation has been launched after a 22-year-old man, David Fernando BG, was found dead in his cell at National Police headquarters in Gijón yesterday afternoon just hours after being arrested for a burglary in the Natahoyo district.

A police spokesman has claimed that the youth died of "natural causes" though an autopsy will be performed to establish exactly what happened.

It seems that the victim was arrested shortly after 7am after being caught by Local Police officers inside a shop in the aforementioned area of the city to which he had gained entry by smashing the glass-fronted doors.

He was then taken to a local health centre for a medical examination prior to being handed over to the National Police, according to normal procedure in such cases.

The prisoner was then locked in his cell and did not request any further medical attention until he was discovered dead at around 2.30pm in the afternoon.

It seems that the dead man had a number of previous convictions for a string of similar offences.
