| With gale force winds and heavy rain forecast, the regional government of the Canary Islands has issued severe weather alerts for the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Gran Canaria starting from midnight last night.
People, especially the elderly, are being warned to stay indoors and to pay attention to radio and TV news weather updates. Motorists have been advised to leave their vehicles in sheltered areas and to avoid any unnecessary journeys, especially commercial travellers carrying potentially hazardous loads.
Strong winds are also forecast for western Andalucía and in the south of Extremadura with torrential rain expected in the Straits of Gibraltar and along the coast of Cádiz.
Further north, more snow is forecast above 900 metres in the Catalan Pyrenees where ten mountain passes remained closed yesterday. |
