| The first 'mascletà' of the year was celebrated yesterday by the Zamorano Caballer firework company in the old Turia riverbed gardens in Valencia with, as it turns out, disastrous results.
One of the fireworks went off in the wrong direction and exploded amongst the crowd of onlookers injuring eleven people including a woman who suffered serious injuries to her leg and was taken to hospital.
Two others were also taken to hospital as a result of their injuries, but the remainder were treated at the scene.
The one thousand kilos of gunpowder used by the company was highly spectacular, especially when it came to the 'earthquake' finale, but by that time the crowds had dampened their interest due to the earlier incident. |
