| The Atlantic Islands, Galicia's only national park, have been declared Spain's greatest natural monument in an internet poll organised by TV company Telecinco, receiving 1,733,675 votes. In second place with 1,201,458 votes were the Picos de Europa in Asturias and third place went to Galicia's Playa de las Catedrales in Ribadeo, with 1,009,161 votes.
Over five million votes were collected on the Telecinco website over a two month period and the outcome shows the public's appreciation of the four island groups that form the Atlantic Islands (Cíes, Ons, Sálvora and Cortegada) which have all the necessary prerequisites to be considered Spain's greatest natural treasure.
The UK's Guardian newspaper also recognised the natural beauty of these islands, voting the Playa de Rodas on the Cíes Islands the most beautiful beach in the world in 2007. |
