| María Eugenia M.M., the doctor injured last night in the Moratella Health Centre in Murcia, died today.
According to sources within Murcia health service, the 34-year-old doctor was shot four times in the head and the chest by a 74-year-old retured taxi driver, P.N.N., just after midnight last night and was immediately taken to the intensive care unit of the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital, but her life could not be saved.
The gunman, who has given a statement today to police, also shot a 40-year-old ambulance driver, who remains in a stable condition in hospital in Caravaca de la Cruz.
A nurse from the health centre, who went to the doctor's aid, confirmed that he only escaped injury because the gunman had a problem with the gun.
The incident occurred just after midnight last night, when the gunman burst into the health centre and shot his two victims, who were working in the accident and emergency department at the time.
The gunman had gone to the health centre during the afternoon with asthma-type symptoms and had been given an appointment with the doctor at 7pm the same day. Instead of returning at his appointed time, the man returned late at night and opened fire.
Shortly after the shooting, the gunman was arrested at the health centre and remains in police custody. The mayor of Moratalla, Juan Llorente, gave a statement to the press saying that the gunman did not know either of his victims and that he was a 'loner'.
According to a statement given to the police, he found the gun in his taxi, some 15 or 20 years ago, when he was working in Barcelona.
The General Council of Medical Colleges (CGOCM) lamented the incident in a statment tonight, calling it 'brutal and pointless' but also underlining that it is not an isolated incident and that other health professionals have been killed while carrying out their jobs.
