| Valencia's Portugese midfielder, Manuel Fernandes, will miss the rest of the season after fracturing his fibula in the game against Getafe on Sunday.
Fernandes picked up the injury in the first half of the match at the Mestalla, but played on until the end of the 90 minutes, unaware that he had broken a bone in his leg.
The break was discovered when he turned up for training this morning still suffering from pain in his leg, at which point an x-ray was performed which revealed the fractured fibula.
According to Antonio Giner, head of Valencia's medical team, Fernandes will have surgery tomorrow and is expected to be fully fit again in time for pre-season training.
When asked how Fernandes could have played on for over an hour with a broken bone, Giner explained that the exact location of the fracture coupled with the 'significant' muscle mass holding it in place and the fact that the fibula is not a 'weight bearing bone' all contributed to the player's extraordinary feat.
Fernandes was not the only one to break his fibula this weekend. Villarreal's Santi Cazorla also picked up the same injury against Almeria on Saturday, although not in exactly the same place and he had to be stretchered off the pitch.
Cazorla, who said he knew that he had broken his bone as soon as he fell, will be operated on this evening in Valencia's Nou d'Octubre hospital and will also miss the rest of the season.
He commented that he was going to miss 'a lot of great moments' with his team over the coming months but added that he was already focused on getting back onto the pitch once his broken bone was mended. |
