A two-year old child has died after accidentally falling into a swimming pool at a villa on an urbanisation in Villafranqueza, Alicante.

The emergency services have confirmed that they received a call for help just before 6pm yesterday and sent a SAMU unit to the scene.

Paramedics spent over an hour trying to resuscitate the child, but to no avail.

The police have confirmed that the child lived in a neighbouring villa on the Balsas Nuevas urbanisation and had crawled under a fence into the garden of the empty villa without the parents realising.

Another child had gone under the fence with the victim and it was this second child who raised the alarm.

A neighbour got the two-year-old out of the water before the emergency services arrived.

Police have opened an investigation.
