| A SPANISH national who spent seven hours buried in rubble in L’Aquila (Italy) following last week’s devastating earthquake has been rescued.
Due to being crushed, Juan Fernando González Cordón, from Gijón (Asturias) had suffered damage to his kidneys and a broken leg.
He is expected to be released from hospital in two to three weeks’ time, the Spanish embassy in Naples confirmed yesterday.
Juan Fernando’s parents travelled from Asturias last night to be with their son in hospital and are being fed and accommodated by the Italian authorities.
He was found by rescue workers, who are pictured digging through the wreckage, yesterday morning.
Spanish consul Luis Gómez de Aranda revealed yesterday that another Spanish citizen living in L’Aquila with her Italian husband remains missing.
María del Carmen Gómez López has not appeared on the list of those who lost their lives in the quake.
This means she could be missing under the rubble, or be in an evacuee camp or hotel on the Adriatic coast where most of the survivors have been taken to.
The consul expects it will take a further five days before the identities of the survivors in evacuation camps are known.
