Emergency declared over forest-fire risk

A STATE of pre-emergency has been declared in the Comunidad Valenciana over the risk of forest fires. The met office has predicted warmer than usual weather for this weekend, but with light north-west winds involving strong gusts of up to 70 km per hour (approximately 35-40 knots). A pre-emergency risk level means no outdoor fires, barbecues or paellas can be held, even in authorised picnic areas. The public has been advised not to drop cigarettes or throw butts out of car windows in rural areas, nor to let off fireworks or bangers except in towns. An increase in traffic on the roads due to the bank holiday weekend could also increase the risk of forest fires, which has led the regional government to call for extra precautions.
