THE number of workers turning self-employed fell by nearly a quarter in the first three months of this year. Based on figures for the first quarter of 2008, a decrease of 23.3 per cent has been seen so far this year. And the number of people coming off the system and giving up their self-employed work rose by 24.2 per cent, a total of 177,241 workers. Most of those who stopped being self-employed were in the Comunidad Valenciana, Murcia and the Comunidad de Madrid with a rise of 38.3 per cent, 36.6 per cent and 36.3 per cent respectively. In terms of provinces, Alicante, Castellón, Córdoba and Toledo saw the highest numbers of people giving up being self-employed. President of the National Federation for Self-Employed Workers’ Associations (ATA), Lorenzo Amor, says Spain has lost 64,000 entrepreneurs as a result of the financial crisis. He stresses that more support should be given to those who work for themselves since they are ‘one of the main economic engines of this country’.
