THE girlfriend of the stepbrother of 17-year-old Marta del Castillo’s killer has been charged and faces nearly a quarter of a million euros in bail money. She is facing trial as a possible accomplice to the murder. But she has declared she is bankrupt and unable to pay compensation. Miguel Carcaño, 20 – Marta’s ex-boyfriend and self-confessed killer – faces a 240,000 payment in bail, as does his older stepbrother, Francisco Javier; this man’s girlfriend, and two other friends of the murderer. The bail money would be set aside in order to cover any future compensation payments awarded to the victim’s family. But Francisco Javier’s girlfriend, María G.M., says she is a student and is insolvent. She says she is unable to pay the bail money requested. According to María G.M., she has no assets in her own name, no income and no cars or property. Her lawyer, José Antonio Salazar, says she ‘is not trying to shirk her responsibility’ but that she has no money. Salazar says there is no justification for María G.M. being charged, since by the time she arrived at the flat she shared with Francisco and Miguel, where the murder took place, Marta’s body had already been disposed of. Miguel had already left and gone to his new girlfriend’s house. This was shortly after midnight, and María says nobody else entered the flat until Francisco Javier came home at around 04.00hrs. Her lawyer also insists that none of the others involved in the case have ever mentioned María’s having been party to the incident. Francisco Javier is believed to have helped Miguel dump Marta's body. |
