| MODERN-DAY wedding lists are more likely to include donations to charity than toasters and towel sets, a recent study has revealed.
Around 115 couples have joined Intermon Oxfam’s Algo más que un regalo (‘more than just a present’) scheme in the last year.
Instead of the Spanish tradition of supplying a bank account number for guests to make their donation to the wedding costs by way of a gift, they are given a copy of Oxfam’s catalogue, Zankyou, which offers a range of different causes they can donate to.
These include micro credits to encourage employment in Latin America, or a teacher’s salary in Africa.
Oxfam explains that as nowadays most couples live together before they get married, they have no need to spend their wedding money on household goods and tend to use it to cover the costs of the ceremony and the honeymoon.
To this end, many more are donating it to charity instead.
Cash donations from guests usually range from 100 to 400 euros, depending upon the closeness of the relationship between the guest and the bride and groom.
Intermon Oxfam says it currently has around 4,000 wedding lists from couples on its books.
