| Spain went through to the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup in South Africa this afternoon with one match still to go in the first phase of the competition, after a header from David Villa finally broke the Irak defence just after half time.
The Spanish national squad now only need to win one more match to equal Brazil's record for consecutive victories by a national team.
Iraq played a very disciplined match, setting the slow pace of the game and, with five defenders, making it difficult for Spain to break through into the box. But the Spaniards patience finally paid off and the Iraquis had no answer at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein. Spain's next match, the final one of the group stage, will be against the host nation, South Africa, on Saturday June 20th. |
