| Spain, one of the favourites to win the Confederations Cup in South Africa, clinched third place this evening in the consolation match in Rustenburgo against the host nation, but not without making fans sweat until the last minute.
South Africa came within minutes of winning the game thanks to Katlego Mphela's 73rd-minute opener, only for super-substitute Daniel Guiza to find the net in both the 88th and 89th minute to leave the home fans shell-shocked.
But just four minutes later Mphela thumped home a superb free kick from 35 yards out to take the match into extra time, when a set-piece by Xabi Alonso slipped past everyone and ended up in the back of the net.
Spain will take some consolation from a spirited finish to a tournament many people had expected them to win, whereas South Africa, despite their defeat, will finish the event knowing that a firm foundation has been laid for next year's World Cup finals.
In the final, the USA were up 2-0 within half an hour and Brazil did not managed to pull level until the 74th minute, when Fabiano got his second of the match. Then an 84th minute strike by Lúcio gave victory to Brazil, the only team to have won the Cup three times, leaving the USA with second place and pride in having come further in the competition than ever before. |
