| With Fernando Verdasco's somewhat unexpected exit, Juan Carlos Ferrero is now the only remaining Spaniard in the Wimbledon singles Championship.
The unseeded player from Onteniente gave a convincing performance to beat the No. 8 seed, Gilles Simon from France, in straight sets and under two hours (7-6, 6-3, 6-2).
Ferrero, ranked 70th in the world, came into the tournament on a wild card and is the first wild card entrant to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon since Goran Ivanisevic in 2001 and the first to reach the quarter-finals of any grand slam since James Blake at the 2005 US Open.
The last time Ferrero reach this stage at Wimbledon, in 2007, he lost to Roger Federer. His next opponent this year will be either Britain's Andy Murray (seeded 3rd) or the Swiss player, Stanislas Wawrinka (seeded 19th). Ferrero is the lowest ranked player left in the tournament.
Fernando Verdasco, Spain's No. 7 seed, met Ivo Karlovic on court number one today in a very tightly contested battle of the big serves, but could not find a way past the 6'10" Croatian's almost unplayable first serve, and went out in four sets (7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6). Karlovic served up 35 aces to Verdasco's seven and the Spaniard got little chance to play the range of shots he is known for. |
