| The family of the 17-year-old who died after being dragged along under a car for more than two kilometres between Alfaz de Pi and La Nucia, are accusing the British couple who were driving the car of getting out of the car, untangling the victim and abandoning him on a deserted road before fleeing the scene.
The accusation came in court in Alicante today from the family of José Antonio Caro Buendía, who died on March 21st last year from the serious injuries he sustained whilst being dragged along under the car.
The British couple accused are David Walter Cook, aged 57 and his wife Angela Maureen Green, aged 46.
Outside the courtrooms, the victim's father José Caro, told the press that he is convinced his son would still be alive had the couple stopped their car, 'but they didn't stop,' he said, 'they dragged him along for two and a half kilometres'.
Witnesses have told how they saw the couple's car, a Hyundai Matrix, stop initially when it ran over the boy, but then pull away again and drive off with the boy trapped underneath.
During the time JoséAntonio was trapped under the car, it went over a speed ramp and the driver manoeuvered backwards and forwards in a deserted road to try and release him from the undercarriage.
The incident initially occurred when the the victim, who was riding a motorbike without any lights on on the CV-763 near the San Rafael urbanisation, crashed into a third vehicle, fell onto the side of the road and was then run over by the Britons' car. Witnesses have described horrific scenes of the wheel crushing José's body and then the car pulling away with the boy trapped underneath, his face clearly visible from behind the car.
Other drivers stopped to help victim of the initial accident and on failing to find the driver of the motorbike, followed the Hyundai which had left a trail of blood behind it.
Emergency services were called to the scene when the victim was found, still alive, but they were unable to do anything for him.
The British couple were identified some eight hours later thanks to La Nucia security camera footage, and forensic evidence proves that they deviated from their normal route home into a parallel road, where the victim was found, and tyre marks prove that the car moved backwards and forwards several times
On inspecting the couple's car, the police found that the underside had been cleaned, but traces of skin and blood were still found. Angela Green was found to have burns on her right hand and a bloodstained cloth in her bag. David Cook had grease stains on his hands.
The prosecution is asking for a minimum of 13 years in jail for both Cook and Green. |
