OVER a thousand passengers trapped on board a ferry in the port of Alicante due to a technical fault have been forced to spend the night on the water. The ship was due to leave for Oran, in Algeria, on Friday night, but a mechanical breakdown prevented its leaving port. Last night, however, passengers were allowed to disembark – but all bar 40 remain on board. Passenger Jesús Montero, who was travelling to Oran with three other people for his work, said he and a group of other Spanish people got off the ship after 20 hours of being unable to leave. But the rest, who are mostly travelling to Algeria from France with their cars, have opted to stay and wait until the ship can start the journey. They cannot get off the boat without leaving their cars, containing all their belongings, behind as the hold of the ship has not been opened.
