Summer has definitely arrived, with temperatures soaring high every day, so if you need to cool down but want to do more than just take a leisurely dip in the sea, here are some waterbased ways to fill the long, hot days in July and August.
Remember, if you are hiring equipment, most places will charge by the hour. You can either say 10€ la hora or 10€ por hora.
There might be a minimum age (edad mínima) or a minimum height (altura mínima) requirement.
Sometimes you’ll be asked to pay a deposit (una fianza) which is returned when you return the equipment in the same condition you hired it.
For a number of these activities a lifejacket (chaleco salvavidas) will be imperative (imprescindible).
On many beaches and in most harbours, watersports can only be practised within a certain area, marked by buoys (boyas) or there might be an area marked by buoys which canoes, kayaks, sailboards etc are not allowed to enter. In order to avoid accidents, make sure you are clear about the restrictions before going into the water.
Try out these sentences before launching yourself into the sea (Answers after the English-Spanish words): 1. Do I need a lifejacket? 2. Am I allowed to canoe within the area marked by the buoys? 3. Is there a minimum age to rent a sailboard? 4. I’d like to rent a jet-ski for an hour. 5. How much does it cost to rent a kayak for two hours? 6. Can you kitesurf here in the mornings? 7. Do you know any good places to scuba dive near here? 8. Where can I rent a sailing boat? 9. Is there a minimum height requirement to go water skiing? 10. I went surfing today for the first time.
