| It has been a good weekend for Britain's Andy Murray. Not only did he win the Masters 1000 tennis tournamen in Montreal (6-7,7-6,6-1) but he also took the number two slot in the world rankings away from Spain's Rafa Nadal.
It is the first time since August 2005 that the first two slots in the rankings have been held by anyone other than Nadal and Federer, who continues to dominate in first place.
Nadal, who returned to the tennis courts in Montreal after two months out to nurse his knee injuries, was knocked out in the quarter finals by the eventual runner-up, Juan Martín del Potro from Argentina.
Murray made history by becoming the first British tennis player to reach number two in the world and confirmed his intention to 'try to go one step further'.
The 22-year-old Scot heads to Cincinnati next week to defend the title he won last year. Other Spanish players reaped rewards in the rankings as a result of last week's tournament. Fernando Verdasco returns to the world 'top ten' and Juan Carlos Ferrero jumps four places to be ranked 25th in the world. ATP World Rankings .1. Roger Federer (SUI) 11.040 points .2.
