| GUARDIA Civil officers from Mazarrón port have intercepted a jerry-built sailing-boat carrying six would-be immigrants from Algeria off the coast of La Azohía (Cartagena).
They were caught yesterday morning, along with a further 11 discovered late the night before.
All claim to be Algerian, but they are currently in the process of being formally identified.
Sources from the Murcia regional government say all 17 are male, including one child, and are all said to be in a good state of health.
They arrived on a motorised raft of five metres long, having sailed across the high seas in an attempt to enter Spain via the ‘back door’.
The men are now being held by Cartagena National Police pending their repatriation.
