| A consumers' association in Seville, the Unión de Consumidores (UCE) de Andalucía, has brought charges against certain brands of potato crisps for marketing their products as 'light' when they do not fulfil the legal requirements to be considered 'light' at all.
According to European legislation dating back to 2006, products described as 'light' have to be at least 30% lower in fat that the original product. The UCE alleges that Pringles, Lays, Carrefour, Hipercor and Mercadona are all in breach of these laws, since not one of the so-called 'light' products is any more than 15.5% lower in calories than the original product.
The UCE in Andalucía also pointed out that on the whole higher prices were being charged for a 'light' product, when in actual fact it was not really as 'light' as it claimed to be. |
