A train driver died and several passengers were injured when the Euskotren they were travelling was derailed in Lezama station this afternoon.

The accident occurred at 4.25pm, when the train collided with the buffers at the end of the line and came off the track.

The 50-year-old driver died immediately as a result of the accident and it took until late this evening for the fire service to extract his body from the wreckage of the lead carriage.

Three other passengers were injured in the accident.  One of them, a 57-year-old woman, is in a very serious condition.
