| SPAIN’S best-loved tennis star Rafa Nadal will play Russian Nikolay Davydenko today in the finals of the Shanghai Masters 1000.
Yesterday, the Mallorca-born racquet-wielding ace beat fellow Spaniard Feliciano López by 6-1 and 3-0 in two sets.
López, from Toledo, was forced to retire from the third set due to an injury.
He apologised to spectators in front of Rafa, saying, “I’m sorry, but I can’t even put my foot to the floor.”
Davydenko beat Serb player Novak Djokovic in three sets by 4-6, 6-4 and 7-6 in yesterday’s semi-finals.
After being knocked out in the US Open and the Chinese Open, today’s match will be a nail-biting eleventh-hour quest for victory for Rafa, leaving spectators at Shanghai’s Qi Zhong Stadium on the edge of their seats.
