| Police arrested another two people this morning in connection with the October 2007 murder of the mayor of Polop, Alejandro Ponsoda, bringing the total to five.
The police have declined to name either of the two new suspects or confirm where they were arrested.
All they have said is that the "investigation is still open".
The two new arrests come on the back of three more arrests made by the Guardia Civil over the past few days, specifically a 34-year-old man from Albatera (Alicante), who has a criminal record for drugs and arms-related offences, a businessman from Polop and the manager of an erotic nightclub in L'Alfaz del Pi (Alicante).
The latter is currently giving a statement to the court in Villajoyosa and the other two have already been remanded into custody.
Ponsoda died on October 27th 2007 in hospital in Alicante, eight days after being shot when he stopped his car in front of his garage door in Xirles, Polop. Initial investigations suggested that one of more people shot the mayor several times. Specialist police investigators have been following "a number of lines of enquiry" since then, one of which is looking into his public work as mayor. |
