| FERNANDO Verdasco's 'aggressive' game failed to see Andy Murray off yesterday during his final round robin match at the London Masters tennis tournament.
But in spite of the Scotman's win in the closely-fought game, he has been knocked out of the finals thanks to Juan Martín del Potro's victory over world number one Roger Federer.
Dunblane-born Murray said the Spaniard 'played as though he had nothing to lose'.
Verdasco only earned one break point to Murray's 12 during a hard-fought match which, had it not been for Del Potro's beating Federer, would have assured the latter's place in the semi-finals.
Andy Murray told his Twitter page: "Anyone know what's going on? I think I'm audi [out] but the rules aren't worded too well."
With Rafa Nadal having displayed a distinct lack of confidence and being wiped out be Swedish Robin Söderling on Wednesday, and Verdasco's subsequent defeat, there are now no Spanish players left in the O2.
Murray, after knocking out the Madrid-born player by 6-4, 6-7(4) and 7-6(3), showed good sportsmanship, telling the crowd that his rival had played 'fantastically well'.
“I don't know whether I'm surprised or not, but it turned out to be very difficult playing against him,” the Scotsman revealed.
In the meantime, world number one Roger Federer lost out to Juan Martín del Potro yesterday.
The Argentinian, who stands at a whopping 6'7” (1.98 metres) in height, proved more than a match for the Swiss player.
Del Potro (pictured) and Federer played three frenetic sets lasting a total of two hours and six minutes.
Federer was beaten 6-2 and 6-3 in the first and third sets, but scraped to victory in the second set tiebreak.
A nail-biting game that saw the players almost neck-and-neck from start to finish was finally carried away by Del Potro. |
