KING Felipe VI's annual Christmas Eve speech once again included a covert appeal to secessionist politicians, as well as raising concerns about young adults' struggle to afford housing and violence against women.
Spanish mum in US jail awaits sentence
22/12/2009
A SPANISH woman who has spent three years in a US prison for attempting to take her young daughter out of the country will hear what fate has in store for her today during a long-awaited trial.
María José Carrascosa had a child with a man from the USA, Peter Innes, to whom she was married between 1999 and 2004.
Carrascosa took their daughter to Spain in 2005, after the couple separated, and refused to return her to the USA.
The complicated custody situation was made even more difficult due to conflicts between Spanish and US federal laws.
During her three years in jail, Carrascosa has had 14 lawyers working for her.
She has always defended her decision to take her child to Spain with her as she claimed Innes had been violent towards her, and had attempted to poison her in order to lay his hands on his inheritance.
On August 23, 2006, the High Court of New Jersey ordered Carrascosa to return the child to her father within ten days.
As the mother was in the USA at the time, the authorities confiscated her passport and forbade her to leave the country.
