The heavy rains that have fallen across Catalunya have flooded low-lying areas of Barcelona, with many roads cut off by the floodwater, and filled rivers and reservoirs in Girona to the brim.
The rain led firefighters to be called out to over a hundred emergencies, especially in the city of Barcelona and in the regions of Barcelonés, Vallès and Maresme, where they have had to pump out flooded basements and remove trees and branches that were about to fall under the weight of water and the power of the wind.
Apart from minor flooding and traffic complications, the downpour has filled reservoirs almost to the limit. The Sau and Susqueda reservoirs are at 92.3% capacity, and the Boadella reservoir is now at 87% of its capacity, compared to 58% just four days ago.
Heavy rain across Girona caused the rivers Ter, Muga and Fluvià and their tributaries to become very swollen and in some cases the pressure of the rainwater has caused them to burst their banks.
The rain was particularly heavy in the city of Barcelona yesterday, where 77 litres of water per square metre was collected.
In Arenys de Mar (Barcelona) firefighters had to evacuate the Sinera school so that the walls could be checked for flood damage.
The beaches at Maresme have once again been left without sand, and the mayor of Cabrera de Mar, Joan Vilà, has announced his intention to take the central and regional Governments to court for not taking any action to protect the coastline.
