| A security guard at the Castelldefels railway station near Barcelona died this morning after being attacked by a troublemaker.
According to eye-witness reports, 20-year-old S.M.G. was causing a disturbance in the station at around 6.30am and the security guard intervened to prevent further trouble.
Apparently, the youth then began punching the security guard, inflicting fatal injuries on him. Paramedics were quickly on the scene and tried to resuscitate the guard, but to no avail.
Local Police officers arrested the youth shortly after the incident and he is being held in the Guardia Civil headquarters in Gavā (Barcelona).
The motives for the attack are as yet unclear. Some eye-witnesses said the youth had tried to jump the barriers without a ticket and had been stopped by the guard. Others claim he was already on a train when he began causing trouble and that he continued to harrass his fellow passengers when he got off with them at Castelldefels, which is when the security guard intervened.
The mayor of Castelldefels, Joan Sau, has conveyed his "utmost sympathy" to the victim's family and colleagues. "It is a very sad and regrettable incident", he said, whilst thanking the police for their "swift and effective" action, resulting in the suspect's arrest.
The incident occurred at the Castelldefels central, one of the town's two stations. The other station, Castelldefels beach, 12 people died on Sant Joan night last year when a they were run down by a train as they crossed the tracks to go to a party. |
