| Antoni Tāpies i Puig, the Catalan painter and sculptor who helped found the first post-war movement in Spain, known as the "Dau al set," and who was connected to the Surrealist and Dadaist movements, has died at his home in Barcelona.
Tāpies was 88 years old and in delicate health when he died at home on Monday afternoon.
Born in Barcelona on December 13th 1923 into a liberal bourgeois family, Tāpies studied law for three years before deciding to devote his time to art.
He opposed the Franco regime, and persistently defended Catalan culture.
He went on to become one of the most important Catalan painters to emerge after the civil war.
He was married to Teresa Barba Fábregas, and together they had three children - Antoni, Clara and Miquel. |
