| Thousands of people took to the streets in a number of cities across Spain on Tuesday night to show their support for the student protestors in Valencia.
In Madrid, more than 2,500 people, most of them students, held a demonstration at the Puerta del Sol, to express their disgust at the violent police reaction to the student protests that have been going on in Valencia since last Wednesday.
There were a few tense moments, in particular when the protestors stopped traffic from entering the Puerta del Sol and marched towards the police line protecting the headquarters of the Madrid regional government offices, insulting and whistling at the officers. They then moved off, closing the Gran Via to traffic and headed down towards Plaza Cibeles and the city hall.
There were further protests in Santiago de Compostela and Vigo, where people of all ages marched through the cities claiming their right to "freedom of expression" and to "education".
Students in Alicante also demonstrated their support for their fellow students in Valencia and were vocal in their condemnation of the police officers' actions there.
Hundreds of people turned out in Murcia to protest against the "police brutality" seen in Valencia over the past few days.
In Andalusia, there were demonstrations in a number of cities including Seville, where over a thousand students came out in solidarity with the students in Valencia.
Over a hundred people gathered outside the Faculty of Social Sciences in Teruel to protest against education cuts and to show their support for the Valencian protestors.
In Oviedo, several hundred more demonstrated against police repression and in support of the students in Valencia. |
