| News has just been released of the death in a traffic accident of J.A., an escaped prisoner from Valdemoro jail near Madrid on February 8th.
The prisoner, who had barely 20 euros in his pocket, escaped whilst on a tourist visit of Madrid as part of a reinsertion programme for drug-addicted convicts.
Suffering from 'cold turkey' and desperate to find drugs, the prisoner escaped from the prison guards and disappeared into Madrid city centre.
Another convict, 29-year-old P.L. who escaped at the same time, turned himself back in the following morning. J.A. however, embarked upon a desperate flight through the streets of the capital, that ultimately cost him his life.
At around 9 o'clock that same night, he was run over and fatally injured as he tried to cross a motorway in Getafe to get to Caņada Real, which is known to have various drugs dens. He was knocked down by a woman driving along the M-50, who was unable to dodge the pedestrian she suddenly found in her path. The driver was not injured in the accident, but J.A. died of his injuries.
An internal investigation has been launched by the prison service into the circumstances surrounding his escape. |
