Arsonists wipe out countryside the size of two small villages

A FOREST fire raging through Benágeber (Valencia) has been brought under control by seven hydroplanes and 300 ground staff.

The blaze, which broke out in the Utiel-Requena district, is thought to have been the work of arsonists, and has been burning since 15.00hrs on Friday.

At last, the flames are mostly out, but forest fires continue to simmer under the surface for several days and can re-ignite if left unattended.

Already, a total of 667 hectares has been wiped out – the equivalent of 813 international football pitches, or that of two small villages.
