Police are investigating the death of a baby in a house fire in the town of Torrijos (Toledo), where the father has also appeared dead in the yard below after jumping off the balcony, and the mother was taken to Toledo Hospital with head injuries.
Speaking to reporters, the deputy Minister in Toledo, Jose Julian Gregory, said that although there are indications that thiscould be another episode of violence against women, he could not confirm it one hundred percent because the police are still investigating the incident.
The dead man, a Moroccan national, was arrested by the Guardia Civil on May 15th this year for attempting to kidnap a child who was with his grandfather in a park in Torrijos.
The mayor of Torrijos, Juan José Gómez Hidalgo, told reporters that the intention the perpetrator's intention had been to kidnap the child and use him as a bargaining tool to exchange for his own newborn daughter, who was in the neonatal unit in Cadiz hospital at the time.
However, sources could not confirm whether the baby found dead today in Torrijos is the same baby girl who was in Cadiz hospital in May and was being claimed by the now deceased father.
The incident occurred at about 05.50 hours today when the Guardia Civil and local police in Torrijos received calls about a disturbance in an apartment. A couple, both Moroccan, were arguing and there were shouts and crashes inside the apartment.
When they reached the apartment building, officers discovered the body of a Moroccan national in the courtyard of the block, and found a fire on one of the floors.
Inside the burning apartment, officers found a dead baby, with no external signs of violence, and a woman with head injuries.
The mother was taken to the Virgen de la Salud hospital in Toledo, and the baby's body is being examined to establish whether it died of injuries inflicted directly by its father or from smoke inhalation as a result of the fire.
