Scrapping snacks for prisoners saves taxpayer two million

CATALUNYA regional government has found a way of saving two million euros without any cost to the taxpayer – by stopping prisoners from having their afternoon snack.

They will also restrict Christmas and New Year's Eve dinners and celebrations for inmates and cut the amount of food served in daily canteen meals by two per cent.

Not only prisoners are affected, however, since the cost-cutting exercise will also see lunchtime menus for governors and wardens rise from 3.19 euros to six euros.

Prison canteens will now only be open from 09.00hrs to 19.00hrs on weekdays and to 17.00hrs at weekends, rather than late into the evening, in order to save money.

The regional ministry of justice says the move will not affect the 'basic quality' of the food served to inmates, however.
