VALENCIA, Barcelona and Madrid are some of the most congested cities in Europe, according to a recent study. And Barcelona sees the highest volume of traffic in Spain. A survey carried out by a well-known satellite navigator company – but one which has not been named – covered 31 European cities of more than 800,000 inhabitants, measuring the extra time taken to reach a given destination due to gridlocks and queues. Warsaw won the dubious honour of being Europe's most-congested city – in the Polish capital, it takes 42 per cent longer to get anywhere because of the traffic – and in the French riviera city of Marseille, 41 per cent longer. In general, in the average large European city, it takes 24 per cent longer to reach one's destination because of he number of cars on the roads. This is much higher in Rome and Brussels, where it takes 32 per cent longer to travel anywhere, and in Paris, where you should allow yourself an extra 31 per cent of time. Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia require 21, 16 and 14 per cent longer to get about, meaning they are among the least-congested of the cities studied, but still heavily gridlocked and polluted compared to most others.
