FAKE police are rife along the AP-7 motorway, real officers warn, and are pulling drivers over in order to rob them.
The Guardia Civil is making a concerted effort to warn petrol station staff and the general publice.
These criminals, mainly of Arab or Latin American origin, target foreign drivers, particularly in rental cars, taking advantage of their lack of familiarity with the country's procedures in order to con them.
They tend to pull over drivers as part of a 'spot check', but also pretending the motorist has a flat tyre or by accusing them of a traffic offence.
While the vehicle's occupier is distracted, other members of the racket will then relieve the car of its contents.
Anyone who has fallen victim to the scam should call the Guardia Civil on 062.
