SWIMMER Mireia Belmonte has won another silver for pain at the London Olympics – this time in the 800-metre freestyle.
The Catalunya youngster, who has so far been Spain's only salvation in what was looking set to be a medal-free Olympic games, reached the finish line in eight minutes, 18.76 seconds, just behind the USA's Katie Ledecky, aged just 15, who netted the gold with a speed of eight minutes, 14.63 seconds and ahead of Peking gold winner, Britain's Rebecca Adlington with eight minutes, 20.32 seconds.
Mireia, 21, from Badalona (Barcelona) was already the speed record-holder for Spain with a time of eight minutes, 22.78 seconds, achieved last year in Eindhoven (Holland) but has now beaten even her own best.
