A BLAZE that broke out near Calviá (Mallorca) this afternoon has already wiped out 20 hectares and continues to burn out of control.
Eight helicopters have been working on the fire in Bendinat since it started at around 15.50hrs.
Although the inferno is currently some distance away from residential areas, it can be seen from as far away as Palma.
Residents report seeing a huge column of smoke in the west of the island from as far away as its capital city.
At the same time, another fire broke out in Son Vida, near Calviá, but this was very quickly brought under control, requiring only two helicopters.
The cause of either fire is not known at stage.
