General strike 'a monumental mistake' says Rajoy

Prime minister Mariano Rajoy has described the general strike planned for November 14th "a monumental mistake" and says that even those who are calling for it know this to be true.

Rajoy (pictured here with Javier Arenas, the PP's under-secretary for regional and local policy) made his comments about the upcoming general strike in a meeting with the PP executives held behind closed doors yesterday to analyse the results of Sunday's regional elections in Galicia and the Basque Country.

In his address to fellow party members, the prime minister pointed out that it was the second such protest called by the trade unions in less than a year of PP government.

On Friday, when the general strike was confirmed, Rajoy said he regretted the unions' decision and the damage it would do to Spain's image in the wider world and that it would not help solve the country's economic problems.
