A MASS public protest managed to prevent an 85-year-old woman from being thrown out of her rented home after this week. The elderly lady was only one month behind with her rent on her property in A Coruña, in the north-western region of Galicia, when the owners started eviction proceedings against her. Around 200 people, including members of the pressure group Stop Desahucios (‘stop evictions’) gathered around Aurelia Rey’s front door just as the police arrived to force her out onto the street and change the locks. Firefighters were supposed to be involved in throwing her out, but categorically refused to do so on humanitarian grounds and carried a Stop Desahucios banner. The group held a demonstration this morning at 09.30hrs in front of the court in A Coruña to demand a solution to the elderly lady’s case. Aurelia thanked everyone there, especially Stop Desahucios, who have managed to prevent thousands of homeowners being evicted by force after they fell behind on their mortgages due to redundancy.
