A FLIGHT between the Balearic Islands was plunged into chaos yesterday (Monday) when a passenger tried to kill himself by opening the door of the plane.

The Lufthansa craft, heading to Ibiza from Palma de Mallorca, was able to land safely at its destination at 11.30 despite the 44-year-old Romanian national becoming violent when confronted.

He attempted to open the door mid-flight and jump out, saying he wanted to commit suicide.

Crew members and passengers leapt on him and pinned him down, at which point he became very angry and aggressive.

Staff discovered he had been travelling with no suitcase or hand luggage, meaning he had taken the flight with the sole intention of jumping out of it and ending his life.

The captain called the control tower for help, and the Guardia Civil was waiting on the ground to take the passenger to Can Misses hospital in Ibiza.

He is said to be suffering from officially-diagnosed mental health problems, but was arrested in hospital and charged with disrupting airline security.
