Snowdrifts trap drivers in Tarragona province
By:

TAILBACKS across the province of Tarragona ensued throughout most of today (Sunday) and yesterday as literally thousands of residents rushed out to see and photograph the snow laying in a thick carpet across the landscape – and many became stuck.

Drivers were warned this morning not to go out without snow chains on their wheels, and cars became trapped in the white stuff throughout the province with a digger being brought in to free vehicles jammed on a road in Prades (Tarragona).

At least 40 cars had become trapped on the TV-7004 last night and needed to be dug out in an operation that took several hours.

Numerous drivers who had to call for help when their cars became stuck had been out skiing for the day or the weekend and were unable to get back when the snow started to fall heavily again.

Many tried to turn round, which left them even more stuck and causing a complete road block.

Weathermen had warned on Saturday evening that snowfall today at high altitudes could reach a depth of nearly two feet, or over half a metre.

Fears that the trapped motorists and passengers would have to spend the night on the road in the snow were unfounded in the end, but it took until around 21.00hrs or 22.00hrs before everyone had been rescued.
