HIGH winds, rain and snow mean 22 provinces are on weather alerts today, with up to four inches of the white stuff expected in Pyrénéen provinces such as Huesca (Aragón), Lleida (Catalunya) and the region of Navarra.

Waves of up to 13 feet (four metres) will be seen off the coasts of Mallorca and Menorca and the Ampurdán district of Girona, and residents and visitors are advised to stay well away from the seafront.

Wind speeds are expected to reach 100 kilometres per hour (over 60mph) in the Balearic Islands, Tarragona and Castellón, and around 80 kilometres per hour (50mph) in Teruel, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Madrid, León, Palencia and Soria.

Yellow weather warnings have been issued for Zaragoza, the Ebro riviera, A Coruña and Lugo, with wind speeds of 70 kilometres per hour (44mph) in the former two and 13-foot waves in the latter two.

Rainfall is expected to reach 50 litres per square metre in Asturias (five centimetres, or two inches) and 40 litres (four centimetres, or just under two inches) in the Basque Country and Cantabria.

Most other regions will escape torrential rain and wind for another day, but moderate rain is expected along the east coast.
