Spain hots up British tennis: Garbiñe Muguruza and Feliciano López through to quarter-finals in Birmingham and at Queen's
23/06/2017
TWO Spaniards are through to the quarter-finals in top tennis tournaments in the UK – Garbiñe Muguruza in the women's singles in Birmingham and Feliciano López in the men's at Queen's, London.
It was third-time lucky for sixth-seeded Muguruza (pictured left), who failed to win a single match during her trips to Birmingham in 2012 and 2015 but who, this time around, knocked out the USA's Alison Riske – world number 45 – in two sets and just 94 minutes.
She was not feeling confident, having lost her Roland Garros title after crashing out in the second round against France's Kristina Mladenovic, but her first grass-court tournament in Birmingham has has gone swimmingly so far and bodes well for her upcoming dates at Eastbourne and then Wimbledon, where she also lost in the second round last year against Slovakia's Jana Cepelova.
Muguruza's and Riske's match started late after the heatwave – which brought record June temperatures of between 30ºC and 34.5ºC to the UK this week – finally broke and turned into rain and thunder.
But the Basque player went on to win six games on the trot, sealing the first set on 6-1 and starting the second on 1-0.
The former world number two – finalist at Wimbledon in 2015 – clocked up seven direct serves, but admitted that the second set, which she won 6-4, was 'quite a challenge'.
She will now face the winner of the match between the USA's Coco Vendeweghe, and her nemesis at the Australian Open, fourth-seeded Johana Konta from the UK, in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile in the men's singles at Queen's, Feliciano López (pictured right) beat France's Jeremy Chardy in two sets to seal his place in the quarter-finals.
López, 35, currently world number 32, walked the first set to end on 6-1 but met considerably resistance from his rival in the second, although still only needed an hour and two minutes to win the match, clinching the second set on 7-6(4).
The Spaniard, finalist in 2014 at Queen's and finalist last week in Stuttgart, will face seventh-seeded Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals after the Czech sweated buckets to dispose of Canada's Denis Shapolvalov in a tough three-set match ending on 7-6(4), 6-7(4) and 7-5.
