Spain wins FIBA Women's EuroBasket against France
26/06/2017
SPAIN'S women's basketball team flattened France yesterday (Sunday) with a 71-55 win at the FIBA EuroBasket in Prague.
Alba Torrens, for Spain, scored 10 points almost at the start of the match, putting her team in the lead – where it stayed from start to finish.
She ended on 18 points, which Sancho Lyttle upped with another 19 plus four steals and eight boards, partly thanks to support on the inside by Laura Nicholls who helped keep France at bay.
Anna Cruz added another five assists and 12 points, forcing France to lose its third FIBA EuroBasket final on the trot – despite Céline Dumerc's 15 points in her last-ever national team game.
The Spanish side's six uncontested points after its initial 10 sparked a robust lay-up from Olivia Epoupa for France whilst Marine Johannes, on the outside, connected, but Torrens' deep three kept Spain ahead by the close of the opening period.
French coach Valérie Garnier was forced to call time out twice and, in the second half, Helena Clak added two fouls to her existing two.
Laia Palau, playing her last-ever FIBA EuroBasket match, sealed Spain's lead in the third period with a twisting jump, and France was too far down by the fourth quarter to climb back.
