Spain's Garbiñe Muguruza wins Cincinnati and is heading for world number one
21/08/2017
SPAIN'S Wimbledon winner Garbiñe Muguruza is on the verge of becoming world number one again after netting the Cincinnati title in less than an hour.
Hot on the heels of her compatriot Rafa Nadal's having soared to the top of the ATP rankings today (Monday), despite crashing out of the quarter-finals at the hands of Australia's Nick Kyrgios, Garbiñe dispatched Romania's Simona Halep in just 56 minutes with a two-set victory ending on 6-1 and 6-0.
This is Muguruza's second title of the season along with Wimbledon, where she is the first Spanish woman to have won after her own coach Conchita did so in the year she was born, 1994.
Now with a prize pot of US$522,450 and 900 WTA points in her back pocket after her third victory against Halep in the four matches they have played each other, Muguruza is favourite to win the forthcoming US Open.
Along with Wimbledon and Cincinnati, Garbiñe has won five major titles in her career – Hobart in 2014, Peking in 2015 and Roland Garros, Paris in 2016.
