KING Felipe VI's annual Christmas Eve speech once again included a covert appeal to secessionist politicians, as well as raising concerns about young adults' struggle to afford housing and violence against women.
Souvenir coins launched for King Felipe's 50th birthday year
22/11/2018
A SOUVENIR coin featuring the entire Royal family for the first time has been released, with denominations of between €10 and €400.
It forms part of a series of coins minted to mark King Felipe VI's 50th birthday year, each of which features a key moment in his life.
One shows HRH Felipe bearing the Olympic flag, another shows him swearing allegiance to the Spanish Constitution, a third depicts the King and his wife, Queen Letizia on their wedding day in 2004, and a fourth features the monarch and his direct heir and eldest daughter, Princess Leonor of Asturias, who turned 13 a month ago.
The collection includes one of the whole family – King Felipe, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, and the latter's younger sister, the Infanta Sofía, 11.
It is based upon a photograph of them on holiday in Mallorca in summer 2017.
The family picture piece is a €50 coin, but the face value of each of them does not necessarily reflect their sale price – the coin where Felipe VI swears allegiance to the Magna Carta is on sale for €1,500 plus IVA.
This is partly because of their uniqueness, partly due to the intricate technique involved, and partly because – unlike mainstream currency – they come in sold gold or silver, as well as with coloured elements.
One of the 'colour' coins is the €10 one showing the King carrying the Spanish flag during the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and the Royal coat of arms on the backs of some of the coins are also in colour.
