| A replica of the 100 golden ducados (ducats) with the effigies of Queen Juana I and King Carlos I of Aragón, minted in 1528, is the chosen wedding present by the regional government for the union between Prince Felipe and Doña Letizia Ortiz, as a symbol of the area’s history and tradition.
The coin was presented today by Aragón president Marcelino Iglesias, which he described as an “extraordinary” piece of art as it is the largest coin ever to be minted in Aragón and probably in the whole of Europe, the original of which is on show in the France National Library, in Paris. The coin is exactly the same as the original: gold, weighing almost 350 grams and measuring 82 millimetres in diameter. The only difference is an engraving along the edge reading “PHILIPPUS ARAGON LAETITIA MMIIII”, with reference to the couple and the year of their union. Iglesias declared that “For the Aragonese people, this is the most valuable piece of our history”.
