| The Daewoo Lancetti has been designed by Italian firm Pininfarina, but its good looks don’t cost the earth. The Koreans have finally figured out that car design is best left to the experts, who have produced a contemporary, pleasing-looking car to replace the dull Nubira, a car that could hardly be described as appealing from a visual point of view. Although buyers in this segment of the market tend to put value for money ahead of fashion, this vehicle proves that good design does not have to be the sole domain of high-end luxury vehicles. The conventional wedge shape and strong shoulder treatment contrast with prominent wheel arches, giving a solid on-road stance. The cabin is airy and alloy-look hubcaps add to the styling. The Lancetti is a real winner when it comes to interior space - a tall adult will find no problems perched in the back of this car, as the rear seat offers plenty of head and legroom. Standard equipment follows the segment trend and includes dual airbags, air-conditioning with pollen filter, in-dash CD player, power windows and mirrors and power steering. There's also remote central locking with an alarm, which is a bonus. The car is solid and quiet and unlike previous Daewoos, there were no rattles or flimsy trim. The front seats are comfortable and the driver's seat particularly has a good range of adjustment. The cushion boasts separate height and angle adjustment, providing a particularly agreeable pew for short drivers.
The dashboard is simple and solid and there are some clever but not exclusive touches around the cabin too – like the padded centre console storage area, divided glove compartment and practically shaped cupholders. Despite a capable engine, the awkward gearshift and ultra-light clutch are typical of many Korean cars and the steering too lacks the precision or feedback found in some of its rivals, understeering when provoked at quite low speeds. The ride however, proved comfortable and compliant. The conventional MacPherson strut suspension absorbed bumps without complaint and its composure over rough roads was good. The four-wheel disc brakes lacked feel but pulled the car up well. It will take more than Italian style to make this car a serious contender for the top spot.
