| The picturesque town of Altea is situated at the foot of the Sierra Bèrnia, surrounded by the clear turquoise waters of the Mediterranean where the typical Iberian structure of its houses - straight lines, white walls and huge patio doors letting in natural light - make the perfect setting for enjoying the glorious Costa Blanca sun. Inside, this mountain villa just outside the town has been given a modern, refreshing and yet comfortable look, which complements its rural setting. Cool in summer, warm and light in winter, the contrast of dark wood and white furnishings create a minimalist but nonetheless inviting feel.
This room feels refreshing in summer but works equally well in winter with a thick white rug and in-built log fireplace. Stay with clean-cut geometrical shapes to compliment the rest of the room. Tall glass vases with a few carefully-chosen flowers add a touch of colour.
Choose uniformity in decoration and furniture for modern flair. Laminated or parquet flooring gives a clean, contemporary look and white attracts the light, but stays cool, making it perfect for the summer. Add some cubist pictures in pastel colours to break up large wall spaces.
Straight lines and wooden flooring have been chosen for the kitchen to mirror the rest of the house. Stainless steel handles, utensils and appliances complement dark wood and prevent the kitchen from being too monotonous with the parquet flooring. Soften the effect and get close to nature by adding a large plant in a white pot, like these palm fronds.
An illusion of space has been created in an otherwise narrow dining room using a long rectangular glass-topped table with wooden legs and white leather chairs. Deep and comfortable, their simple square shapes also serve a decorative purpose. The magnificent white piano and floor-to-ceiling bookcase add a touch of class. |
